Frequently Asked Questions

What Makes THRIVE Different?

With THRIVE, students have the opportunity to participate in on-site extracurricular activities, including athletics and/or clubs with their peers at their HOME SCHOOL, as they are still members of their home district. For some activities, the student may need to be enrolled in a traditional class such as football or choir in order to participate in competitions or contests. Students also need to maintain eligibility according to OSSAA in order to participate in games or contests.

Each home district will have an open lab available for students to meet with teachers for interventions and additional assistance when needed. THRIVE will also be striving to create a sense of community with our students and families throughout the school year.

Who can participate?

Any student in grades K-12 who are enrolled in our participating districts may enroll into THRIVE! Keep in mind, virtual education works best for self-motivated students who can work independently and who have a learning coach such as a parent, guardian, or older sibling to ensure that the student is progressing as they should and staying on task.

How do we enroll?

Families should enroll their students with their home district first and then visit the THRIVE Enrollment page on our website. Approval for participation in blended learning and extracurricular activities in 7th-12th grade will come from your site principal.

Is there a cost to participate?

There is no cost to participate in THRIVE! There may be a fee for devices or a fee to replace lost, stolen or broken technology if borrowed from your home district should you check one out from them.

*Summer courses for 9-12 do come at a cost per student but this in an optional program for students should they need it.

  • Establish an environment that is conducive to a student’s learning.

  • Commit at least 2-4 hours per day to support and guide your student throughout coursework

There will be resources and training sessions available for families to assist you in becoming a successful Learning Coach for your child.

What will my child study?

The subjects in THRIVE are the same grade-appropriate core subjects as those of on campus school students, with minimal variations. All courses follow the Oklahoma Academic Standards and are taught by Oklahoma certified teachers.

Will students receive a standard diploma if they complete graduation requirements with THRIVE?

Yes, students completing graduation requirements will receive a standard high school diploma from their home district. Credits, grade point average, and any other requirements for graduation from THRIVE are identical to those of the traditional high schools. Credits are transferable within the state so students do not lose completed course credits if they move from one public school to another.

Will students be able to take honors or Advanced Placement courses online?

Yes, students will have access to advanced coursework on the virtual platform should that be the best fit for them and approved by their home district.

Will students be required to take state-mandated achievement tests or other required tests?

Yes, students in third grade and above must take the tests mandated by the Oklahoma State Department of Education in person, at the student’s home district campus. Parents and students will be notified of the times and locations of those tests. Students taking AP tests will also take those tests in person at the assigned time.

There are also required Reading Sufficiency Act screeners and benchmarking that will be required throughout the year for students in grades K-5. These will take place with the THRIVE Elementary Teacher or at your home district site.

Will a student be allowed to be on campus for some classes and virtual for others?

Students in grades 6-12 may participate in blended learning. This means that students may participate in OSSAA sanctioned extracurricular activities on campus with approval from the site administrator of their home district. Students may also take courses on their campus if it is not available through THRIVE. A student must be eligible to compete in OSSAA activities. All blended learning options MUST be approved through the home site principal beforehand.

Will my child be in front of a screen all day?

No. We estimate that THRIVE courses will require students to spend 2- 5 hours a day on the computer, depending on the number of courses taken and the pace at which your student is most successful. Screen time varies between grade level and course load as well as the type of subjects studied. The involvement of the parent or guardian will be crucial to ensure that the student is not spending too much time in front of a screen.

Do you take attendance at THRIVE?

Yes. THRIVE teachers verify attendance by weekly progress made in their courses and by attending the required virtual sessions for core courses. Attendance involves two components:

  1. Students have 7 days, Monday - Sunday, to complete that week’s coursework; however there is flexibility as to when that work is completed. Students will be counted absent if they fall behind 10% in a course.

  2. Students are required to attend virtual class sessions each week for core classes (math, science, English and social studies) and well as Spanish courses. These are scheduled at the same day and time throughout the year so setting a schedule is simple. The may be conflicts with career tech and/or work schedules for our older students. Please communicate with the director if in the event that is a concern.

*Parents are subject to the Oklahoma compulsory student attendance law and are accountable for compliance in virtual school just as they are in the traditional school setting. Attendance is sent weekly to each home district.

If we enroll into THRIVE and it does not meet my student’s needs, what are my options?

Parents should make the decision to enroll in virtual school in a very thoughtful manner. Virtual education is a tremendous option for most students, but some find that the format is not a good fit.

Please see the Important Dates for the enrollment options. THRIVE will include semester enrollment periods to assist those who need to transition mid-year, however only 1 transition will be allowed per calendar year.

What if my child has special needs?

Parents of children with disabilities on a Section 504 Accommodation Plan or on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will want to meet with their student’s team at their home district to determine if the virtual education is the best placement for their child. If found that THRIVE is an appropriate placement, teachers will accommodate as needed per the students 504 or IEP. THRIVE has a Special Education Teacher on staff to assist our students and families however it is critical for the parent/guardian be an active participant in the student’s learning process while at home.
